Businesses must be able to rely on their search solutions' security. You have control over the security of the data you search for with Azure AI Search.

Overview Of Security Approaches

AI Search security builds on Azure's existing network security features. When you think about securing your search solution, you can focus on three areas:

  1. Inbound search requests made by users to your search solution
  2. Outbound requests from your search solution to other servers to index documents
  3. Restricting access at the document level per user search request

Data Encryption

Like all Azure services, the Azure AI Search service uses service controlled keys to encrypt the data it stores while it's at rest. Indexes, data sources, synonym maps, skill sets, and even indexer definitions are all encrypted.

Azure Key Vault is available if you want to use your own encryption keys. Using your own customer-managed keys has the advantage of enabling double encryption on every object you use them on.

Secure Inbound Traffic

You can lower the attack surface if your search solution is externally accessible via applications or the internet. With Azure AI Search, you may use a firewall to limit access from particular IP addresses to the public endpoint for free.

You can strengthen security with an ExpressRoute circuit, an Azure Gateway, and an App service if your search service will only be utilized by on-premises resources.

Another solution is to switch to an Azure private link instead of the public endpoint. Along with other resources, you will also need to set up an Azure virtual network.

The most secure option is to use a private endpoint, but doing so requires paying extra for services that must be hosted on the Azure platform.

  Introduction Azure AI Search is a service that allows to reliably extract content search, extract, and understand at scale. It is typically used to search for documents, data surveys, and chat-style Copilot apps over proprietary data. Indexing and querying are Azure AI Search's two main workloads.
