Power Apps: Formulas & Properties

Formulas and Properties

Power Apps typically include numerous properties and formulas. Every element within a Power App will have a range of properties to utilize. A portion of these will characterize a specific attribute of the item. A screen for example has:

  • BackgroundImage

  • Fill

  • ImagePosition

  • LoadingSpinner

  • LoadingSpinnerColor

These properties are set up and persist until you change them. Some properties will perform actions based upon a state of the item. For example, a screen has:

  • OnHidden

  • OnStart

  • OnVisible

Properties of this kind will perform a change linked to the property only when that specific behavior is triggered; for instance, when a screen appears, you can refresh the data.

To implement change or specify an action that occurs when a property is activated, Formulas are utilized. Consider formulas as guidelines. They can perform calculations, trigger events, or assist in establishing a logical progression within which specific actions may occur. They resemble Excel formulas, but Power Apps offers a wider range of functionalities.

Certain controls possess attributes like OnSelect, which allows you to specify, through a Formula, the actions that should occur when you select it directly.

Top 10 Formulas

The key to effectively using formulas lies in discovering what functions well and testing different approaches. In the formula bar, there's a feature named IntelliSense. This tool from Microsoft 365 assists you by potentially auto-completing a formula or recommending a structure for the formula you want to create (hover over underlined items in red to receive guidance on any issues being flagged).

The more you utilize IntelliSense, the more instinctive it will become, so there's no need to feel pressured at the beginning. Simply experiment and gain experience to achieve the outcomes you desire. There are approximately 150 formulas available for use with Power Apps, all of which can be found on Microsoft's documentation website.
